ASBO New York Partner Forecast5 Presents Monthly 5Sight Tip

Wednesday, July 10, 2019

Using 5Sight to visualize and compare teacher experience between neighboring school districts.

This tip shows how 5Sight lets users easily visualize and compare school district data over time. In this note, we’ll compare two neighboring schools with similar average staff sizes, average salaries, and enrollment. As shown in the summary table produced by 5Sight, the teachers in school district A have an average of 11.1 years of teaching experience, while the teachers in school district B have taught for an average of 14.8 years. The school district with the slightly more experienced teachers on average has a slightly higher average salary as well.

With 5Sight, we can easily drill down into the distribution of teacher experience in each of these districts. The histogram below shows the share of teacher FTEs that have a given level of experience. The darker colored bars are school district A and the lighter blue color is school district B. While both districts have many teachers with between 10 and 20 years of experience, the difference in distribution is striking. In school district B, approximately 25 percent of teachers have 20 or more years of experience, while fewer than one percent of teachers in school district A have similar levels of experience.
