ASBO New York Partner Frontline (Forecast5) Presents Monthly Data & Analytics Tip
Wednesday, December 7, 2022

The last two years have seen dramatic declines in Student Performance, with the global health crisis causing widespread learning loss affecting most students, and increased impacts on marginalized groups. The test cancellations in 2020 and limited participation in 2021, forced districts to evaluate new ways to assess how students were performing, so they could best educate moving forward. The use of historical data to influence future decisions is a common practice when one considers finances or enrollment. However, the same idea can be used when contemplating how to encourage academic growth in students at all grade levels. The State Assessment Results Chart shows a historical view of how students have scored previously on a particular exam. Review of the trend in any one exam, grade level, or specific cohort can provide insight into where issues are so administration can watch those students carefully, thereby ensuring success and an equitable education for all. Our recommendation is that this chart - and others like it highlighting different state assessments – are reviewed as necessary, but especially following any data release. Combined with current data surrounding student course grades and interim assessment information, students can be effectively evaluated, eliminating any questions as to their status. This time in a student’s life is critical for forming essential knowledge that will serve as a foundation for their future endeavors.
