ASBO New York Partner Frontline (Forecast5) Presents Monthly Data & Analytics Tip

Wednesday, August 2, 2023

Having finished up the 22-23 school year recently, you may be tempted to start looking ahead to the 23-24 school year. However, before sharpening your pencils and getting out the new backpack, it is important to reflect on the year that was. What experiences or events did the district go through this past year? What lessons could be learned from them? For example, although inflation has cooled a bit recently, did the district still spend more than originally budgeted in certain areas? Did the expected revenues from state and local sources come to fruition or fall short?

One way to help answer these questions is through data. In our Budget Management tool (formerly 5Cast Plus), we have a new dashboard called the Monthly Board Report. This dashboard offers a Month-to-Date and Year-to-Date birds-eye view of both Revenues and Expenses compared to the budget set at the beginning of the year. At a quick glance, you can see revenues received or monies spent in keys areas both for the previous and current year compared to the annual budget. Having graphs, charts and a short narrative allow different consumers of this data to easily digest what is going on in the district.

Taking stock of how things went in the previous year will help to refocus your goals and initiatives for the
year to come.
